TOPIC:  You Are A Watchman

Read: Jeremiah 6:22 – 30 (NKJV)

22. Thus says the LORD: “Behold, a people comes from the north country, And a great nation will be raised from the farthest parts of the earth.
23. They will lay hold on bow and spear; They [are] cruel and have no mercy; Their voice roars like the sea; And they ride on horses, As men of war set in array against you, O daughter of Zion.”
24. We have heard the report of it; Our hands grow feeble. Anguish has taken hold of us, Pain as of a woman in labor.
25. Do not go out into the field, Nor walk by the way. Because of the sword of the enemy, Fear [is] on every side.
26. O daughter of my people, Dress in sackcloth And roll about in ashes! Make mourning [as for] an only son, most bitter lamentation; For the plunderer will suddenly come upon us.
27. ” I have set you [as] an assayer [and] a fortress among My people, That you may know and test their way.
28. They [are] all stubborn rebels, walking as slanderers. [They are] bronze and iron, They [are] all corrupters;
29. The bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; The smelter refines in vain, For the wicked are not drawn off.
30. [People] will call them rejected silver, Because the LORD has rejected them.”

Anglican Daily Fountain Devotional 25 February 2022 STUDY

God was not happy with the people of Jerusalem (His people). They had rejected all His kind gestures towards them and blatantly worshipped idols like it didn’t matter, despite all of God’s ‘complaints and warnings!” Therefore, God was ‘pushed’ to rise against them, by allowing the enemy to invade them (vv. 22-23). Even at that, His kindness and mercy did not allow Him to leave or forsake them. He still sent and set Jeremiah as a watchman to keep warning them (v.27), perhaps, they would listen and be saved.

As God’s people in Nigeria and many places, have we not become like the people of Jerusalem? Are we not worshipping all kinds of idols under different guises and blatantly saying, despite His warnings, ‘God is so loving, He cannot destroy us?’ Even so, in His love and mercy, He has set you (His own), as a watchman – to warn the people, who are rebellious and stubborn, of the impending doom that awaits all who reject God and His Son, Jesus Christ, as Saviour and Lord. Are you crying out like Jeremiah (v.26), or are you at ease in Zion (Amos 6:1ff)? Remember Ezekiel 3:17-18.

PRAYER: Dear Father, may I not just remember daily that I am a watchman, but daily occupy at my post in word and in deed, in Jesus Name.
