TOPIC:  Getting Ready to Go

TEXT:  John 14:1-6 (KJV)
14 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.

In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way?

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

KEY VERSE

Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral was in planning decades before her passing on September 8, 2022. The oak coffin used to convey her remains was made more than 30 years before her death. The design of the new state hearse built by Jaguar Land Rover for the queen’s coffin was approved by the monarch herself.

Our Lord prepared the disciples against his imminent departure in our text. During His final moments, He imparted upon them divine imperatives. He had notified them of a cynical plan by one of the disciples to betray him. He spoke also of an unjust trial, leading to his crucifixion and death. The disciples were understandably sad and despondent. To calm their nerves and allay their fears, He promised He will be coming again to receive them into prepared mansions in heaven. When doubting Thomas expressed his inability to know the way, Jesus replied, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life…”.

If Christ our Lord thought it necessary to prepare for his death and build capacity in His disciples before time, we need to learn a lesson from it. People plan and prepare ahead of every important journey, but are thoughtless and careless about the day of death. The final call to depart this world will eventually come to everyone.

To the believer, death is a changing room where the soul robes itself in immortality. The expectation of Christ’s second coming and the promised resurrection of life give believers confidence in death. The take-home lesson here is for everyone, young and old, to reflect on the subject of death seriously and ensure they prepare adequately for it by obtaining salvation from Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Wisdom demands that we prepare for the imminent journey to our eternal home.
