During Socrates’ famous trial in 399 BC, he said, “The unexamined life is not worth living”. His point was that everyone ought to ask questions about what they live for, or else they live a worthless life. It is always important to ask oneself, “What do I exist for” or “What is my goal in life” or “What is God’s purpose for me on earth?” Your answer to these questions will be pointers to where your destination would be.

In our text, Paul the Apostle emphasised the believer’s purpose for living. His charge implies that God’s glory should justify believers’ actions. In doing so, they would have a conscience void of offence towards God and man.

The Scriptures reveal why man was created in the first place. God Himself said, “Even everyone that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory… they shall shew forth my praise” (Isaiah 43:7,21). This presupposes that all of man’s actions that contradict His glorious character of holiness and majesty must not be found in the purview of those who profess to have a relationship with God.

Many profess that they are of God, but their behaviour runs contrary to God’s glory. They glorify self rather than God in their actions. God’s glory is secondary in their work plan. As believers, we must understand that our purpose for living is to glorify God. We are to seek to please Him in all things.

His glory must be the metric for measuring everything we do. As we make personal decisions and choices, we must do so only to honour God. Where our plans and God’s glory clash, His glory must be held to prevail.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: If you aim at God’s glory in all you do, all you do will be glorious.
