TOPIC:  Hearing from Heaven

TEXT:  Joshua 11:1-9 (KJV)
11 And it came to pass, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard those things, that he sent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achshaph,

And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains south of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the west,

And to the Canaanite on the east and on the west, and to the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon in the land of Mizpeh.

And they went out, they and all their hosts with them, much people, even as the sand that is upon the sea shore in multitude, with horses and chariots very many.

And when all these kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Israel.

And the Lord said unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them: for to morrow about this time will I deliver them up all slain before Israel: thou shalt hough their horses, and burn their chariots with fire.

So Joshua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom suddenly; and they fell upon them.

And the Lord delivered them into the hand of Israel, who smote them, and chased them unto great Zidon, and unto Misrephothmaim, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they smote them, until they left them none remaining.

And Joshua did unto them as the Lord bade him: he houghed their horses, and burnt their chariots with fire.

Ancient Israel never lost a war after receiving assurances from heaven that her forces would return triumphant.

Israel under Joshua enjoyed this blissful experience in its campaign to conquer Canaan as part of the drive to take over the Promised Land. A great coalition of kings massed against Israel, which was warring with a force militarily inferior to that of the enemy. Thus, Israel was set to be humiliated. That was when Joshua heard from God. He promised to deliver the enemies up to be slain before Israel and did exactly as He said. Israel “smote them, and chased them”.

When the enemy seems to be overrunning us with their frightening forces all around us, we must give room to hear from God. He is close by, whispering in “a still small voice” that the enemy will fall before us. The Lord speaks to us as we read His word and meditate on it. He also speaks through His servants in the church, as we listen to inspired teachings and song renditions. When we are at the warfront of evangelism, we can always be assured of His answer to our pleas.

Jesus’ prayer shortly before Calvary was that God should keep believers from evil, the adversary as well as fight our seen and unseen battles for us as He did for the children of Israel. We need that intervention now as Satan seeks to stop the work of the great commission by defocusing us through marginal challenges like sicknesses, socioeconomic concerns, family disputes and so on. Certainly, “our light affliction, which is but for a moment, [will work] for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” if we rely on what He has said.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Heaven’s invisible forces are battle-ready to protect the saints.
