The last letter to the seven churches in Asia Minor was written to the Laodecia Church. The letter, as can be seen in our Fire Scripture, opens with Jesus calling Himself “the Amen, the faithful and true witness”.

Indeed, He is the God of truth who is perfectly trustworthy, faithful and able to guarantee His word. As the Amen, Jesus guarantees the truth of God’s promises that are still available to us today.

In verses 15 and 16, Jesus used the expression, “lukewarm, neither cold nor hot”, to describe the spiritual state of the church in Laodicea. The city of Laodicea was a wealthy centre of business and trade. The atmosphere of prosperity had led to spiritual laziness and nonchalance in the church.

They were no longer “hot” enough spiritually to respond to or recognise the Holy Spirit’s guidance, and they were not quite “cold” enough to realise their need to repent and return to a life of dependence on God. Beloved, this is a true picture of some churches and some individuals today.

When they newly started, they were very fervent and very “hot”. They were even dreaded by the kingdom of darkness because they did a lot of spiritual damage to their kingdom. But as soon as breakthroughs and blessings began to come, they became absent and unavailable or inconsistent in their fellowship or church service.

They began to give one excuse or the other; their position or whatever they were doing for God began to suffer. They also became negligent about personal commitments. They no longer see anything bad in missing church programmes. God is calling on such people to repent from their lukewarmness or He will spew them out of His mouth.

Those who think they are rich and do not need God are the most miserable because if you go deep down into their lives, you will discover that they need God more than any other person. Beloved, how is your walk with God? Are you hot or lukewarm? God wants you to be on fire for Him everyday

O deeper yet, I pray
And higher ev’ry day,
And wiser, blessed Lord
In Thy precious holy Word.

Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus
And His perfect will.

3. Deeper, deeper, tho’ it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.

4. Deeper, higher ev’ry day in Jesus
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His image
Perfected at last.
