MFM Daily Devotional 29 October 2023 MESSAGE

One of the names of the Lord Jesus Christ is the Truth. It means that He is truth personified and the enemy is the father of lies. Truth is very powerful and always prevails. The Bible says that nothing can be done against the truth but for the truth (2 Corinthians 13:8).

God is the God of truth, righteousness and justice. He wants us to always stand for truth and speak the truth, especially to those in power. It is disheartening that the corridors of power is full of sycophants, liars and deceivers. Failure to speak truth to power is one of the banes of our society. When we do not speak to power, leaders are ill-advised and justice is miscarried. Oppression and evil will also be rampant.

There will be misrule and possibly anarchy. God wants us to speak truth to power. He also enjoins us to always pray for leaders. He is aware that leaders are human who can err. Therefore, our role as followers, believers, pastors and prophets is to let them know and be properly guided by the truth. If we do not do that, they are likely to make mistakes or continue to offend God.

In the Old Testament, King Ahab wanted to go to war at a time God was not pleased with him. Though danger lurked in the corner and his life was at risk, he did not know what was in store for him in the spiritual realm. His friend, King Jehoshaphat, advised that they hear from God’s prophet called Micaiah. 400 prophets had prophesied to Ahah and assured him that he would be victorious in the battle and return to the palace in jubilation. Micaiah inquired of the Lord and told King Ahab nut to go to the battle because he would be killed. Ahab became furious and got Micaiah beaten and jailed for speaking the truth.

In the end, God vindicated his prophet because Ahab actually died in the battlefield. If he had accepted the truth from God’s prophet, he would have lived. It was God’s mercy that saved Jehoshaphat who went into the battle with him.

In the New Testament, John the Baptist was unafraid and told the truth to power. Scripturally, it was wrong for King Herod to have married his brother’s wife. Nobody had the courage to tell him his fault and advise him to make amends. John the Baptist did. This led Herodias and her daughter to plot his assassination. It was made possible by the approval of the erring King Herod himself. Though he died a martyr, John the Baptist died for the truth and his life and ministry glorified God. Apostle Paul too spoke truth to power.

His encounter with King Agrippa revealed that he sought to convert the king but the king rejected the truth. Beloved, Jesus, the word of God is the truth. The truth saves and delivers. All believers are called to speak the truth to all, especially those in power. Can God count on you?
