MFM Daily Devotional 4 June 2023 MESSAGE

In the Bible, fasting refers to the discipline of abstaining from food, or things that give one pleasure for a limited period of time, in order to give greater attention to spiritual matters Although it is often linked with prayer, it can be a spiritual exercise all on its own. In fact, fasting can be called “prayer without words”, in which case our time without food etc. should be an intense time of listening to God trying to gain a sense of His direction and meditating on His word (i.e., pondering its principles over and over to consider how they apply to specific situations in our lives).

The first benefit we want to look at is that it makes us to abstain from sin and all fleshly pressures which make it difficult to receive answers to prayers.

Dearly beloved, I have discovered that in our weekly deliverance programme, people who participate are compelled to do a three-day dry fast, which enables them to abstain from all forms of fleshly pleasure. By the time they finish and are going home, they always give testimonies.

This is due to the fact that the fasting takes them away from all the places of sin that they are used to. Fasting will give greater sense of belonging to those who do it because some things cannot be done without adding fasting to our prayers.

Another benefit that can be derived from fasting is stated in the book of Isaiah 58:6, “Is not this the fact that I have chosen? to lose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?” To fast means to be delivered from the grip of wicked powers and to undo or destroy heavy yokes placed on people’s necks. During and after fasting, new things always start with those who do it wholeheartedly.
