MFM Daily Devotional April 19, 2022 MESSAGE

Today, let us start by considering what a curse is. It is the direct opposite of a blessing. Nobody wants to be cursed. People prefer blessings to curses. To curse is to say that mischief should come upon a person, a group of persons, a thing or a place. It is to bind a person with a spell.

Curses are words put together to torment people with great calamity. Curses are vehicles of the problem and have harassed and destroyed many lives. Curses can only come from three sources: God, man and the devil.

The first curses in the Bible were issued by God Himself, when Adam and Eve, our forebears disobeyed His commandments. He cursed the serpent, Eve, Adam and even the ground (Genesis 3: 14-19). This goes to demonstrate to us that the consequences of disobedience, which is sin against God, are curses. It is a serious matter indeed. God’s punishment comes in the form of curses. We must bear this in mind since it is scriptural.

In Deuteronomy 11:26-32, where Moses was concluding his exhortation to obedience, he summed up all his arguments for obedience in two words: blessing and curse. That is, rewards and punishments. He made the Israelites to understand that if they were obedient, they would enjoy the blessings of the promises of God, and if they were disobedient, they would reap curses instead.

The devil, on the other hand, uses curses to torment people through his agents because he has no blessings to give to anybody. He is only an embodiment of curses. We see the case of Balaam and Balak in Numbers 22. So, wicked men and women use curses as a tool of punishment against those who they consider as their enemies most of the time, children of God, as in the case of Balak, Balaam and the Israelites.
