BIBLE IN ONE YEAR
Jonah 1-4; Romans 2:1-16Psalm 85:1-7

FIRE SCRIPTURE: Joshua 9:21-27
21 And the princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 And Joshua called for them, and he spake unto them, saying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, saying, We are very far from you; when ye dwell among us?

23 Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 And they answered Joshua, and said, Because it was certainly told thy servants, how that the Lord thy God commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26 And so did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slew them not.

27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the Lord, even unto this day, in the place which he should choose.

MFM Daily Devotional July 14, 2022 | OUTLINE

Yesterday, we learnt about how Jacob used a curse to place an embargo on Reuben, his firstborn. Our Fire Scripture today is looking at another group of people that were placed under an embargo because of their deceit. Joshua and the leaders of Israel failed to pray for God’s direction in dealing with the Gibeonites.

As a result, they presumptuously entered into an agreement (a treaty) with them, which they could not break. This misguided and unwise decision brought the ungodly Canaanites into Israel’s communities – this type of action is forbidden in Deuteronomy 7:1-3.

In all decisions of life, we should look to God for His wisdom and guidance so that we can avoid unnecessary sorrow and tragedies. In Joshua 9:21, the Bible reads, “The princes said unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.”

Dear reader, if you go through the Bible carefully, this embargo placed on the Gibeonites relegated them and they were the ones doing all the menial jobs for the Israel nation. They were slaves and the downtrodden of the land. Embargo is like a siege that does not allow good things to come and does not allow evil things to go. The evil and negative things will remain.

Embargo is like a ban or impediment to success and prosperity. It ensures that there is no promotion or uplifting. There was an embargo placed on Jabez; his was that of sorrow and poverty until he called on the God of Israel before he was delivered and got his coast enlarged (1 Chronicle 4:9-10).
