Topic: Pergamos: The Compromise Church

Fire Scripture
Rev 2:12-17

12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;

13 I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, even where Satan’s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.

14 But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

15 So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitanes, which thing I hate.

16 Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth.

17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.

MFM Daily Devotional Today 7 October 2021 Outline

The third letter of Jesus Christ was written to the church in Pergamos. Pergamos was the greatest city in Asia. It was the capital with a very popular library that had more than two hundred thousand books. It was a great religious centre with two major shrines. One was dedicated to Zeus, the principal pagan deity.

The second was built for Asclepius who was called “The Saviour.” He was supposed to be the healing god. Asclepius was symbolised by a serpent. That was why God referred to Pergamos as the seat of satan. Rev. 2:14-15 (our Fire Scripture) says, “But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication.

So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.” Balaam was a false prophet of the Old Testament who sold his services to an ungodly king and advised the Midianite women to tempt the Israelites to compromise their faith through idolatry (i.e. worshipping false gods or anything in place of the one true God) and immoral behaviour (Num. 22:5, 7; 25:1 -2; 31:16). For this reason, Balaam represents corrupt and deceptive teachers or preachers or any believer who leads or influences God’s people to compromise with worldly beliefs and behaviours, all for the sake of selfish interests or personal advancement.

Beloved, by the two verses above, Jesus was saying that there were some people in the church of Pergamos who were teaching exactly the same thing that Balaam taught Balak. These types of people taught that once you are saved, you can do anything you like. They claimed that they can commit any sin as long as they come back to God to ask for forgiveness later, forgetting that even though God is love, He is also the consuming fire.

Hope you are not having the spirit of Balaam in you. Are you a sheep or goat in the church? May the grace to be a true ambassador of the kingdom fall upon you, in the name of Jesus.

Hymn
Stand up! stand up for Jesus

1. Stand up! stand up for Jesus,
Ye soldiers of the Cross!
Lift high His royal banner;
It must not suffer loss.
From vict’ry unto vict’ry
His army shall He lead,
Till ev’ry foe is vanquished,
And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict,
In this His glorious day;
Ye that are men now serve
Him Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up! stand up for Jesus!
Stand in His strength alone:
The arm of flesh will fail you,
Ye dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armour,
Each piece put on with prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger,
Be never wanting there.
