Scripture Union Daily Guide 22 December 2021

Topic: Mary’s Song of Praise

OPENING PRAYER: Lord, let the light of your word shine into my life as I meditate on your word.

SCRIPTURE: Luke 1:39-56

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?

Having heard that Elizabeth was already expecting a child, Mary rushed to visit her cousin. She knew Elizabeth had been barren all her life and so this must be a miracle from God Almighty. Read vs.41-43 again and imagine the spiritual atmosphere as these two God-fearing women fellowshipped together. Notice that the yet unborn baby in Elizabeth’s womb was already spiritually sensitive (v.44). What does this say in general about abortion and how can Christian mothers start obeying Proverbs 22:6 even before their babies are born?

Elizabeth’s warm reception and prophetic words must have been a great encouragement to and confirmation for young Mary. Notice how her proclamation centred on God’s blessings and favour and commendation of Mary’s faith (vs.42-45). She was not jealous of Mary (v.42). How do you react to friends whom God blesses in a special way? Mary’s song (vs.47-55), commonly called the Magnificat after the Latin translation of the first word, expresses God’s progressive fulfilment of the salvation plan through history.

What other truths does Mary say about God’s character (vs.49,50), the way He works among people (vs.51-53), and His faithfulness (vs.54-55)?
