Topic: Presumptuous king of Tyre about to fall

Opening Prayer: Open my eyes O Lord that I might behold wondrous things from your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Ezekiel 28:1-19

Question(s) for Reflection

  • What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
  • Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

In the previous two chapters, Ezekiel pronounced judgment upon the city of Tyre. The message of doom is now against her ruler. The king of Tyre arrogantly boasts about being almighty, superhuman and eternal (v.2) calling himself a god as he possesses wealth and influence (v.3). God did not punish him because of his riches but because wealth and the power it brings corrupted him (cf. James 5:1-6). Sennacherib (2 Kings 18-19) and Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4:30-31) are two examples where prosperity, power and success corrupted and led to their destruction.

Observe how God compares the king of Tyre to Satan (vs.11-19; cf. Isaiah 14:12-15). If one really considers it well, one can conclude that the powers behind this city leader was the devil himself. And as we read about the downfall of Lucifer (v.17), the same thing would befall the king (v.19). Notice also in v.14 that God appoints leaders of nations and chose the ruler of Tyre and put him in his place of authority. But likewise, He removes from power those who are arrogant (Daniel 2:21).
