Scripture Union Daily Guide 26 November 2021

Topic: Security And Belonging

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

ScriptureNehemiah 7:1-7; 61-73

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Outline: The completion of the wall (6:15) was a great milestone, but that was not all. Security (vs.1-4), belonging (vs.5-73), rediscovering worship (ch.8), confession of sin (ch.9) and rededication to the Lord (ch.10) were other necessary aspects of Nehemiah’s responsibility.

Today’s passage focuses on the security and belonging. While the gatekeepers were central to security matters, the musicians and Levites were central to the restoration of corporate worship and a return to the Law of the Lord (v.1). Security (vs.1-4): Notice how Nehemiah describes Hananiah (v.2). To what extent can this be said of you? What nature of instructions (security brief) did Nehemiah give Hananiah and Hanani (v.3)?

Every person – supervisors, gatekeepers and guards – play an important role in the security framework of God’s people. Belonging (vs.5-73): Notice the importance of record keeping, and how the genealogy record found proofed helpful in ascertaining who belonged where and how many (vs.8-60)? Nehemiah wisely handled the case of those who could not readily trace their lineage (vs.62-64). Record keeping were not just about people, but meticulous financial records were also kept (vs.70-73).
