Topic: Egypt’s doom

Opening Prayer: I open my heart to meditate on your word, teach me your ways oh Lord.

ScriptureEzekiel 30:1-26

Question(s) for Reflection
• What does the passage teach about God the Father, God the Son or God the Holy Spirit?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Outline: The “day of the Lord” in the Old Testament speaks of calamity and destruction of the godless. The prophecy that Ezekiel pronounces here speaks of divine judgement and chastisement on all the evil in Egypt. What does vs.5-9 tell us about all allies of Egypt? The arm of Pharaoh is a symbol of his power and strength. Read vs.21-22 and 24-25 and notice how many times the phrase ‘breaking Pharaoh’s arms’ is mentioned. God strengthens whom He will, and He weakens whom He will.

Relying on Egypt’s military might, Judah had rebelled against Babylon and made an alliance with Egypt though God warned them that would be futile (see Jeremiah 2:36-37). However, the attempt made by the Egyptian King to give a helping hand to Jerusalem proved fruitless when merciless king of Babylon and his troops attacked (see Jeremiah 37:5-10). God often makes one wicked man a scourge to another. Of what do the strikes on the land, its inhabitants, cities, rivers and idols remind us (cf. Exodus 7-11)?

Practice/Word Application
• And so? Read vs.8a, 19, 25b and 26b to remind you again of the purpose of divine judgment.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• O sovereign God, please help our leaders to completely put their trust in you.
• Pray for Christians who are being persecuted as a result of their faith to have courage and perseverance. Pray for God,s speedy intervention and help.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Deuteronomy 28:2; 2 Sam 9-11; 1 John 2
