TOPIC:  Beyond Comprehension

TEXT:  Isaiah 40:12-18 (KJV)
12 Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

13 Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord, or being his counsellor hath taught him?

14 With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

15 Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing.

16 And Lebanon is not sufficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt offering.

17 All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.

18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?

KEY VERSE
“All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity.”

Bible scholars say ancient Jewish Scribes and prophets worked with two writing implements. One was exclusively for writing only the name of God while the second writing tool was for the normal narrative. This was reportedly done by the custodians of the documents because God was respected for the ineffable honour that matched His incomprehensibility.

Similarly, today’s text hints at the extreme grandeur that surrounds the Almighty God. He created nothing as great as Himself. His works and acts perfectly point to His blazing glory. His creations are sobering, superlative, sweeping and sublime. When we consider them, we are called to stand in petrifying awe, bereft of words to capture His greatness in our limited human language. We can come to a close and faint understanding of Him only as we link Him to the vast cosmos He brought forth. What we correctly view as boundless and beyond what can be expressed in our reasoning turns out, in His estimation, as “a drop of a bucket…the small dust of the balance…a very little thing.”

The Bible affirms that God holds this extensive universe including all its inhabitants, earthlings and celestials, “in the hollow of His hand”. It is a comforting assurance that man can trust God to be his Guide as nothing can go wrong under His watch.

We who are already enjoying a fruitful relationship with this great God and are not distracted by the noise of godlessness around us must leave our comfort zones to introduce our incomprehensible Lord to a world lost in doubt and fear. They need to know there is a God greater than the marvels of science, technology and artificial intelligence of the age.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The truly blind man is he who stares at the wonders of the universe and does not see God in them.
