TOPIC: A Rebellious Accord

TEXT: GENESIS 11:1-9
11 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.

And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.

And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.

And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.

Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.

So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.

Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the Lord did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the Lord scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.

KEY VERSE
“So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city”
(Genesis 11:8).

DCLM Daily Manna Thursday 4 January 2024  MESSAGE

A delusional French socialist and historian, Louis Blanc, was facing public execution. He was given a chance to say his last words. Bereft of all sobriety, he boasted stoutly, “When I was an infant, I rebelled against my nurse. When I was a child, I rebelled against my mother and father. When I reached a mature age, I rebelled against the state. When I die, if there is a heaven and God, I will rebel against him.” But reality would have hit him when he opened his eyes to death.

The attempt to build a tower to reach heaven was against the divine instruction to multiply and replenish the earth. Despite the grim lessons from the great flood, they determined to gratify their depravity against God’s will. They embarked on a futile project of independence from God, and in the process, sought to truncate God’s plan of populating the earth.

With the outbreak of rebellion, there will be anarchy, a breakdown of law and order, disunity and regression of society. God, therefore, destroyed the people’s efforts by confounding their language so that they could no longer communicate with one another. This accounts for the diversity of languages in the world.

God hates rebellion and would not condone it in anyone who professes to serve Him. Rebellion against constituted authorities also attracts grave consequences. God will not spare a rebellious person unless he genuinely repents. He abhors rebellious unity but approves the union of positive-minded people whose motives and actions lead to advancement, justice and peace in society. Believers should, therefore, endeavour to contribute to the good of their organisations and communities.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A rebellious accord is a perfect recipe for regrettable discord.
