MFM Daily Devotional 18 May 2025 Message

Sometimes, when the devil has tried all he could to get a child of God down, all to no avail, he could re-strategise by coming in through one’s loved ones and trusted friends. He could bring provocations from unlikely quarters.

For instance, after a series of attacks and afflictions on Job’s finances, family, business, and health, a grieving Mrs. Job advised her husband to curse God and die. We should not be too quick to judge this woman. She was grieving. She had lost everything. Right in her eyes, her world came crumbling.

All she had laboured for with her husband for years came down in just a few days. She had been serving God with her husband for years, but all of a sudden, the God they had served for years seemed not to be looking in their direction anymore. She didn’t understand life any longer. She was in pain, the reason for her ill advice. She asked her husband to curse God and die.

Note that the devil had a mission to test Job and bring him down through any means. This time around, it was through the love of his life. Thanks be to God for Job; he didn’t fall for the devil’s bait. Job could see that this was a provocation from hell.

Note that Job did not call his wife a foolish woman. He said she spoke like one of the foolish women.
“But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.” – Job 2:10

Imagine if Job had called her a foolish woman, a fight would have ensued that could have probably killed Job, and his portion would have been hellfire. Job knew that his wife wasn’t foolish to have given that kind of counsel. She might even have given him wise counsel in times past. Job could recognize the devil’s provocation. He must have expected comfort and soothing words from his wife, but alas, she released a bombshell.

Beloved, sometimes when we are being provoked, we must learn to look beyond the flesh and blood that is hurting or provoking us and rebuke the devil the way Jesus did to Peter.

Also, remember the provocation of the Syrophoenician woman at the edge of her breakthrough. Jesus literally called her a dog, but she did not bother. She could have gotten angry and abused Jesus, but then, she would also have missed her miracle for life.

The case of Hannah and Eli was another case study that whenever provocations are coming from unlikely quarters, we must look beyond the people and resist the devil so that we do not miss out on what God has in store for us.
