TOPIC: Beware of Modern-Day Idolatry
FIRE SCRIPTURE: Daniel 1:1-8
1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.
2 And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3 And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes;
4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
5 And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.
6 Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
7 Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abednego.
8 But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Daniel was a teenager that followed the doctrines of his fathers. He was among those taken captives in Babylon but he never departed from the truth. He did not need anyone to motivate him; he did not need anyone to encourage him; he did not need anyone to convince him. He stood for the truth. When he got to Babylon, he carefully observed his environment and purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the king’s portion.
What do you think is the king’s portion? The king’s portion is everything distracting you from focusing on God and your positive goals. The things that get adults and teenagers carried away are the king’s portion. Daniel purposed that he was not going to be defiled.
The kind of deep love and passion that some people have for sports like football, basketball, wrestling, boxing as well as other pastimes like film, music and so on at the expense of their spiritual lives is worrisome.

These forms of entertainment have became idols in the lives of many people. including believers. They buy tickets for admission into film houses and stadia but they do not pay their tithes and do not give their offering. They would rather watch football matches than attend mid-week church services. Many miss Sunday services due to the hang over they are nursing from Saturday parties they attended. Football, film and music are modern-day idols. Beloved, if you are guilty of this, you must turn a new leaf today!
The more you expose yourself to these worldly activities, the less of the presence of the Holy Spirit you retain. Some films and music are lewd, immoral and defiling
Beloved, keep the word and ways of God wherever you find yourself. You do not throw away godly morals because you have changed location. On campus and in your workplace, be a light and do not work for the devil. Daniel became a wonder because he continued firmly in all the doctrines and laws of the Lord in a strange land. For this reason, God made him His favourite. You can work your way to God’s heart like Daniel by standing firm on the truth, even in the face of bad friends and trials.

MORNING
1. O Lord, please make me special to You, in the name of Jesus.
2. Mercy of God that distinguishes a man, come upon my life, in the name of Jesus.
3. O Lord my God, anoint me with the oil of favour, in the name of Jesus.
EVENING
4. Powers assigned to divert my star, die, in the name of Jesus.
5. Any gathering of wicked elders assigned to turn my helpers against me, receive confusion and scatter, in the name of Jesus.
6. Anything programmed into my life to make me stagnant, be uprooted by fire, in the name of Jesus.
7. I refuse to eat the king’s portion, in the name of Jesus.
