Topic: Help From God’s Prophet

Fire Scripture: 2 Kings 4:1-7

Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the Lord: and the creditor is come to take unto him my two sons to be bondmen.

And Elisha said unto her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thine handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.

And when thou art come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought the vessels to her; and she poured out.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said unto her, There is not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children of the rest.

MFM Daily Devotional 19th July 2021 Outline

The story captured by our fire scripture today contains some profound lessons that we all need to learn and utilize. A woman, who was highly troubled and in great need, went to Prophet Elisha for help. Her late husband was one of Elisha’s disciples otherwise known as sons of the prophet. The man had died leaving a debt he could not pay. At this time the creditors were worrying the woman and were threatening to take her two sons to serve them as slaves until the woman paid the debt.

The late disciple of Elisha was an upright person. His wife, in introducing herself to Elisha said, “Thou knewest that thy servant was an upright man.” It is therefore surprising that the same man died poor and insolvent. Something must have gone wrong with the man because the promise of God is that the righteous shall leave great inheritance for his children’s children.

What could be the reason the man died poor and left a huge debt behind? One of the possible explanation is that the man lacked the knowledge and wisdom to handle or solve challenges in his life. He did not know what to do and who to go to and get the help he desperately needed. The burden of that challenge could have led to his untimely death. I pray that God will give you the grace to know how to handle the issues of your life successfully, in the name of Jesus.

Unlike her husband, when the creditors kept harassing her, the woman ran to Prophet Elisha and sought for his help. The man of God told her to get as many vessels as she could gather and begin to pour from the little oil she had at home into the pots. The oil the not stop flowing until there was no more pot or vessel to fill. Then Prophet Elisha told her to go and sell the pots of oil and pay her debt. The woman’s problem became a great testimony to the glory of God.

Beloved, who is your prophet and spiritual father? A closed mouth is a closed destiny. No man is an island. Don’t die in silence like the son of the prophet. Seek and get help from the oracle of God.

Memory Verse: 2 Chronicles 20:20 – “And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.”

Motivational Quote: The one who God helps shall never be stranded.

Prophetic Word: I decree that Your divine helper shall locate you today, in the name of Jesus.

HYMN: Stand up! stand up For Jesus

1. Stand up! stand up for Jesus, Ye soldiers of the Cross!
Lift high His royal banner; It must not suffer loss.
From vict’ry unto vict’ry His army shall He lead,
Till ev’ry foe is vanquished, And Christ is Lord indeed.

2. Stand up! stand up for Jesus! The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict, In this His glorious day;
Ye that are men now serve Him Against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger, And strength to strength oppose.

3. Stand up! stand up for Jesus! Stand in His strength alone:
The arm of flesh will fail you, Ye dare not trust your own;
Put on the gospel armour, Each piece put on with prayer;
Where duty calls, or danger, Be never wanting there.
