TOPIC: BE STEADFAST I

Fire Scripture: 1 Peter 5: 6-11

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

One of the excelling attributes of God is His steadfastness. He is steadfast in His love and mercy. Steadfastness is having a firm loyalty or constant and unswerving dedication to something or someone. God said, “I am the Lord and I change not” (Mal 3:6). That is steadfastness. God requires that we (His children) too should be steadfast. What does it mean to be steadfast?

Being steadfast is a mark of a true Christian and disciple of Jesus. If you are neither hot nor cold, you are not steadfast. If you are inconsistent in your faith and walk with God, you are not steadfast. If you are always rising and falling (on fire for God today and committing sin the next day), you are not steadfast. God is in need of steadfast and loyal soldiers. Can you be trusted and counted as one?

In Galatians 5:1, the Bible admonishes all believers, “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” This shows steadfastness entails working consistently and walking circumspectly (carefully, accurately, and precisely with God, according to Ephesians 5:15-16).

In Joshua 23:7-8, the man of God, Joshua, gave these words of admonition to the children of Israel, “That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them: But cleave unto the LORD your God, as ye have done unto this day.

Joshua’s advice was for the Israelites to cleave to God and avoid evil association. That is another picture of steadfastness. In the world of subtle, modern-day idolatry, are you steadfast? Are you not bowing to “a Golden Image” out of the need and pressure to earn a living, get a job or contract, get promotion or make money? Beloved, this calls for soul searching and self-examination. I pray that the Lord will help you, in the name of Jesus.

MEMORY VERSE: 1 Cor. 15:58 – Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE: This is the mark of a really admirable man: steadfastness in the face of trouble.

PROPHETIC WORD: Receive the grace to walk with God steadily and consistently, in the name of Jesus.

HYMN: Because He Lives I Can Face Tomorrow

1. God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus;
He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon.
An empty grave is there to prove my Saviour lives.

Chorus:
Because He lives I can face tomorrow;
Because He lives all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living just because He lives.

2. How sweet to hold a new born baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives;
But greater still the calm assurance,
This child can face uncertain days because He lives

3. And then one day I’ll cross the river;
I’ll fight life’s final war with pain;
And then as death gives way to vict’ry,
I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.
