Men of great authority are often deluded to think that they can challenge God. When Moses and Aaron told Pharaoh that God wanted him to let Israel leave Egypt, he replied, “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice… I know not the LORD, neither will I let Israel go” (Exodus 5:2). Similarly, Sennacherib and Nebuchadnezzar also questioned the personality and authority of God.

Pharaoh continued his resistance to God’s will to let Israel go. The plague of hail was to come because of this and the Egyptians were warned to gather their cattle and servants out of the field before its arrival. Those that feared the Lord obeyed but others left their cattle and servants in the field and suffered great losses. Satan’s pride and ambition to be like the most High is often manifested by his children.

“Power”, they say, “corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely”. Men in power are deceived to believe they have now become bigger than what they actually are and must do things – evil things, to make “a statement”. The result is often mass poverty, disenchantment, deprivation and oppression.

God comes with a heavy hand to deliver the message to them that He alone is God. Pharaoh died in the Red Sea after the death of all the first-born male children of Egypt. Sennacherib lost 185,000 soldiers in one night and was later killed by his children. Nebuchadnezzar was made to eat grass like an animal for seven years until he realised that God is “the [true] King…” (Daniel 4:37).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: It is foolish for man to strive with God.
