TOPIC: Divine Judgment on Warmongers

TEXT:  Exodus 17:8-16 (KJV)
Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

11 And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

12 But Moses hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

13 And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

14 And the Lord said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

16 For he said, Because the Lord hath sworn that the Lord will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

Historians’ verdict is that World War II began on September 1, 1939, when a European nation launched expansionist attacks on a neighbouring nation after it had previously taken over other states on the continent. The country was not satisfied with its lot as it looked for wider spheres of influence. That alarmed the other world powers, forcing them into a mere regional conflict that spiralled into a global

God abhors warmongers. So, when a warlike race called the Amalekites took on this bloody trait and became a thorn in the flesh of Israel, God’s own people, the Lord decided to tame them. They attacked the Israelites from the rear, where Israel had its weak and vulnerable groups. The assault took place after their deliverance from Egyptian overlordship. Later, the Lord decided to take vengeance. The Lord said He would “utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven”.

The Lord is averse to conflicts that lead to destruction of lives and property. He is against individuals and nations whose pastime is war and bloodshed. When societies and their leaders gang up against His people and their inheritance, God is not disinterested. He will fight to protect His people from being dispossessed and destroyed. It is the reason the Christian must not take the law into his own hands but always allow God to adjudicate for him.

We receive real peace, equity and justice in society when we wait for heaven to settle scores for us instead of the worldly way of taking up arms to fight our course and avenge for ourselves. Jungle justice and mob action do lead to more wars, deadly disturbances, loss of lives and mass destruction of precious infrastructure. As salt to the earth and light to the world, the Christian must not be part of such social bedlam.
