TOPIC:  Say No To Backsliding (II)

Fire Scripture: 1 John 2:15-20
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.

18 Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

20 But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.

Memory Verse
Matthew 24:13 – “But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.”

MFM Daily Devotional 5 December 2022 OUTLINE

Yesterday, we stressed that it is important that you know the danger signals of backsliding. We also examined three of them. Today, we shall examine more of these signals so that you avoid them. A major danger sign that leads to backsliding is quitting when the going gets tough. John 10:12-13 underscores this point when it says, “But he that is a hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

The hireling fleeth, because he is a hireling, and careth not for the sheep.” Beloved, I counsel you to heed God’s word in Matthew 24:13. It assures us that those that endure to the end shall be saved. I pray that you will not get discouraged or quit. God will multiply His grace towards you and you will finish well, in the name of Jesus. Also, desiring worldly pleasures and riches lead to backsliding. We live in a time where wordliness and materialism are being used by the god of this world to shipwreck the faith of many believers. Lot’s wife looked back and became a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26).

Demas, a missionary companion of Paul, forsook Paul and the work of God because he fell in love with the present evil world (2 Timothy 4:10). Matthew 13:22 affirms that the care of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke God’s word in people’s lives and they eventually lose faith. Beloved, remember God’s warning and obey it: “If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15-17).

Another cause of backsliding is not being grounded in the word of God. The Bible says that we should let God’s word dwell in us richly. When we are well grounded in God’s word, we will not be easily deceived or drawn away from faith by any wind of doctrine. We will also be like the house that is built on the rock, which when rain, wind and storm came, it stood still and could not be swept away (Matthew 7:26-27). What are the characteristics of those who are not grounded in the word? They turn away their ears from the truth (2 Timothy 4:3-4). They have no root and in time of temptation, they fall away (Luke 8:13). They are like the house built on the sand; great shall be their fall.
