Topic: Set apart for the Lord’s work

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

Scripture: Acts 13:1-12

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

• Is there any command for me to obey?

Notice the racial, cultural and social diversity of the Antioch church (cf. Galatians 3:26-28). Churches should reflect our oneness in Christ, not our society’s divisions (e.g., white churches, black churches, Hispanic churches). Notice the operation of spiritual or ministerial gifts in the Church (vs. 1; cf. Eph. 4: 11 – 14).

The Holy spirit asked the Antioch Church to set apart Barnabas and Saul for a special work but note the context in which this was done and how the Church responded (vs.2-3). Through prayer and fasting, they heard the Holy Spirit and obeyed. Note also the principle of synergy or collaboration at work. The Holy Spirit functions extremely well where there is cooperation (vs.2,4).

We do well to encourage more teams of two or more, not just individuals working alone. The laying on of hands was used often in the appointment or dedication to service (Acts 6:6; 13:3), indicating acceptance and approval of those who have been selected by the congregation.

It is worth observing that though they were in God’s will, Paul and Barnabas encountered a challenge (vs.6-12). Filled with the Holy Spirit they declared God’s mind (not their own opinion or curse). Note the result in v.12 and Paul’s words in v.11a and compare it to contemporary selfish cursing of so-called enemies.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Father, help me to face the specific work to which you have called me.

• Praise God for the grace that made you a Christian and the empowerment to be a faithful witness.
