TOPIC: Lessons from the Life of Hezekiah (X)

FIRE SCRIPTURE: 2 Kings 20:16-21
16 And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah, Hear the word of the Lord.

17 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried into Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the Lord.

18 And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, which thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.

19 Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the Lord which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?

20 And the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made a pool, and a conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

21 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers: and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.

MFM Daily Devotional 12 April 2024 Message

Hezekiah was short-sighted as far as his future was concerned. Although a very great king, he lived only for the present as his statement implies when Isaiah spoke to him. “Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken. And he said, Is it not good, if peace and truth be in my days?” He wasn’t living to leave a good legacy. Once there was peace and truth in his days, the future generation could get rotten. As a result of this shortsightedness, he didn’t train his son and heir, Manasseh, in the way of his God. He left the young man to himself and that one was to become the worst king Judah ever had.

Contrary to his forbear David, who always talked to Solomon about God and also made great provision for him to build the temple, Hezekiah didn’t have such a mindset. David left a good legacy for Solomon. He made the fulfilment of his destiny easier by providing ahead for the building of God’s temple. We also see the way Job always atoned for his children from time to time to secure their future (Job 1:5). Hezekiah missed it in the area of parenting.

Beloved, it should be noted that your influence does not end with your death. The life you live now has an impact on those who come after you. What legacy will you leave them? Hezekiah did nothing to fight for the future generation.

How are you trusting God for the future beyond you? What can you leave for those after you that will encourage them to press forward in the walk of faith?

Shortsightedness may not seem like a significant thing, but it has led to the tragic end of some. Live for today, but more so for tomorrow. One day you will look back and see what your influence has done. It will either bring glory to God or make you wish you had done better.
