Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 December 2021
Topic: Submit One To Another!
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I request that you help me to encounter you as I meditate on your word.
Scripture: Ephesians 5:21-33
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?
• What is God revealing to me in this passage?
Outline: When submission is discussed, both in the church and in the home, the emphasis is usually on the woman. On the contrary, notice that the injunction here is mutual (v.21). It is not one-sided, so the man has no basis to lord himself over his wife. Notice the basis of this mutual submission.
It flows naturally from a humble heart filled with love and reverence for Christ and then to one another. If reverence for Christ is the determining factor, submission should be easier. The wife would not see this as servitude but rather a demonstration of a spirit filled life in relationships.
For a safe travel, a driver needs to be in charge of the vehicle even if all passengers are experienced drivers. Observe the comparison in v.23. How should this be done? Now read vs.25-33 again and notice the qualification of the command to husbands. The love demanded from the husband is not mere affection or erotic but rather agape love. Reflect on Christ’s love for the Church, the purpose and outcome.
